PostSubject: Interconnectivity   Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:13 am

This one is for the methodological individualists in the house.

From wikipedia.

Interconnectivity is a concept that is used in numerous fields such as cybernetics, biology, ecology, network theory, and non-linear dynamics. The concept can be summarized as that all parts of a system interact with and rely on one another simply by the fact that they occupy the same system, and that a system is difficult or sometimes impossible to analyze through its individual parts considered alone. The concept is closely linked to the Observer effect and the butterfly effect.[1] It is often linked to the concepts of interconnectedness which is used to refer to the spiritual, and interdependence which refers to the moral, rather than physical or scientific.

How do you resolve the notion of individualism with the concept of interconnectivity?

I guess this is one way to look at it...

I resolve the whole/part conundrum by switching between objective and subjective thinking.

Objectively (from Gods' perspective) each human is simply a nameless node in a cosmic network of interconnectivity and causation.

Subjectively (from the individual's point of view) I am not just a passive node, passing along causation from above. I am also a generator of causation, due to the fact that my output may be different from the input. My response to external causes is unpredictable, in the same way that a certain statistical outcome for a system cannot be predicted for any particular part of the system.

PS---I was just kidding about the "nameless" node thing. I'm sure that God knows everybody's name, or at least their social security number. Very Happy

PPs---I couldn't make any sense of the video. What was he trying to say?

He was basically making the case that there are individual differences between us all but when looked at from afar just become components of the whole.

When we view the earth from an airplane, all the people on the ground look like nameless ants. If God created all that exists, then he created ants. Do you think God knows every ant's name? How about the names of each and every virus?

As to our social security numbers, I think you have God confused with the IRS. Laughing
