PostSubject: The Inner Light   Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:08 am

Quote :
The Inner Light
by The Beatles

Without going out of my door
I can know all things of earth
With out looking out of my window
I could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Without going out of my door
You can know all things of earth
With out looking out of my window
You could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Arrive without travelling
See all without looking
Do all without doing

You can listen to the song here...

This song is clearly an interpretation of chapter 47 of the Tao Te Ching. Here's a translation by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English.

Quote :
Forty-seven
Without going outside, you may know the whole world.
Without looking through the window, you may see the ways of heaven.
The farther you go, the less you know.
Thus the sage knows without traveling;
He sees without looking;
He works without doing.

What do you think of the George Harrison's version and what do you think the meaning of this chapter is?

I like it.

It sounds like it means that the truth is inside you.

Just a note...

In AQAL or "Integral Theory" the knowledge refered to here is Upper Left quadrant knowledge. While this is valid knowledge it isn't knowledge of "everything".

Here's another illustration showing the sorts of things that one finds in each of the quadrants.

And a more simple one... Smile

I truly admire George Harrison, in fact I recently just purchased All Things Must Pass, Living in the Material World, Traveling Wilbury's. I appreciate and respect so much about George, including the spiritual side he introduced.

I have no problems with those lyrics, but my concern is they can easily be misunderstood.

For instance, Aaron, ironically, coincidentally, not a word of a lie, I picke up a book called ME to We which I started reading tonight.

It's a story about an amazing 12-year-old Canadian kid who created the Free the Children charity. An amazing story. And this kid was 13 when he went to India without his parents to investigate child labour, and got on CNN and then a long-sought interview with the Canadian prime minister.

My point is. He left his cozy room, his cozy home, his cozy community, his cozy country, he went, as a 13-year-old, to a dangerous part of the world.

Man I don't think he could have sucked up that knowledge smokin' a dube and an' trying to reach nirvana in his room, dude.

So despite the sarcasm, believe it or not, I just absolutely respect the spiritual side of G.H. and the Beatles have always been my #1 band.

So I'm just saying when i think of that poem, though, I think of that 12-year-old's journey.

A lot of myth, of which I'm sure you're aware of, also mythologizes the journey, in fact, the dangerous journey. Can that journey occur in your room in your head. Some of it perhaps. Definitely not all of it.

Ying and yang, I guess.

Yes BH, that's what I was getting at with the note above. Smile
